Britons have come to the defense of Cheshire-born Harry Styles after social media erupted over his accent in a new clip from his latest film Don’t Worry Darling.

The 28-year-old actor stars alongside Florence Pugh, 26, in the psychological thriller set in 1950s California – directed by his girlfriend Olivia Wide.

After a clip from the upcoming film was shared on social media, fans were divided – with some US critics claiming he was doing a bad imitation of an American accent.

But the Brit has taken to Twitter today to strongly defend the singer-actor, arguing that it was just his northern accent and that he was never trying to do an American accent.

One said: ‘Many of us think that Americans don’t understand English accents unless it’s a London/posh Tory Southern accent.’

Similarly, Katie said: ‘I’m watching every one[one] Slate Harry Styles’ accent when it’s literally my accent.’

Another user said she was going ‘mad’ at claims he was trying to do a crappy American accent: ‘It’s such a shame why people are so loud and wrong on the internet…

‘This Harry Styles accent thing is driving me up the f*****g wall bc it’s literally just his voice WTF do you mean?????? What accent is that? A f*****g British one bc he’s British.’

In the clip, Harry and Florence – who play a young married couple named Jack and Alice – are seen arguing over Jack’s job.

He says: ‘Not everyone gets this opportunity and if you keep talking like this you’re going to risk it all.’

Florence, who is also English, does a noticeable American accent in the film, while viewers thought Harry was trying on a different twang.

One said: ‘Yorkshire to Boston to the Bronx to the Gold Coast in one take,’ while a user named Nikki said: ‘I’m not defending Harry Styles but he’s from Cheshire and 10 minutes from where I’m from…’

Another said: ‘Wow he really said Mr Worldwide with that accent flyover’.

Another user said: ‘Where’s the American accent?’ Another asked: ‘Does he mean English?’

One fan wrote: ‘When I tell you I’m not ready for Jack I wasn’t ready for Jack,’ to which someone replied: ‘I don’t think anyone is ready for that “pronouncement”.

Another Twitter user said: ‘What’s wrong with his accent?’ To which another replied: ‘Which one?’

One person said: ‘I’ve never seen Harry Styles say a bad accent in the Don’t Worry Darling clip… baby girl is his accent…’

A user called Elise took it a step further and told of a US woman who said Styles’ accent was all over the place: ‘Americans have got to be the stupidest people of all time.

‘Harry Styles, a British guy, speaking in his typical British accent? Other pronunciations exist, like Pavitra.’

Those who aren’t particularly fans of the singer still corrected those who believed Styles was trying to do an American accent, saying: ‘I’m not a Harry Styles trooper but it’s just a Northern English accent ma’am.’

Another said: ‘I don’t think Harry Styles is doing an accent in that clip, isn’t that just his real voice?’

Another chimed in: ‘Well I’ve got Harry Styles infamous and I’m keeping my mouth shut baby but I don’t think he’s trying to make an accent I think he’s just talking…’

One fan wrote: ‘Everywhere for everyone: Harry Styles is supposed to have his natural accent in Don’t Worry Darling.

If another person tweets to me about “he’s doing a terrible job with the American accent” I’m going to lose it.’

Don’t Worry Darling began shooting in Los Angeles in late 2020, but production was shut down for two weeks after someone on set tested positive for Covid-19.

It wrapped production in February 2021 and also stars Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Olivia Wilde.

The film triggered a bidding war among 18 studios who were all keen to acquire the project and New Line Cinema won the auction.

Don’t Worry Darling is slated to release on September 23.
