‘I immediately responded to these characters who were deprived of importance and lived on the fringes of society. Any link to anything else exists only in the realm of social media, which I do not engage in.

‘The connection between this kind of digital muckraking and our desire to make this film is non-existent and should be met with a shrug. I’d rather talk about what the film has to say than things that have nothing to do with the film.’

Bones and All also stars Taylor Russell, Mark Rylance, Chloe Sevigny, David Gordon Green and Francesca Scorsese.

The Eighties road movie will have its world premiere on September 2 at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in Italy before hitting US theaters on November 23.

‘My real hope is that the audience will not reject the film as provocative because it deals with such taboo things as cannibalism,’ explained Guadagnino.

‘With Bones and All, I wasn’t interested in shock value at all, which I hate. I was interested in these people. I understood their moral struggle very deeply. I understand what they are going through. I am not one to judge anyone. If you’re struggling with cannibals, you can make a film about them and you’re not codifying cannibalism as a subject or a tool for horror.’
