Conservative media stars and far-right provocateurs found their latest outrage cycle this week when pop superstar Lizzo thrilled concertgoers by playing a 200-year-old crystal flute owned by former President James Madison.
Rather than appreciating a skilled and classically trained flutist by showing her fans a priceless piece of American history, right-wing pundits saw Lizzo’s performance as a “soft totalitarian” act to “degrade our history”.
Before showing off the delicate instrument at Tuesday night’s event in Washington, DC, Lizzo was invited by the Library of Congress to examine its collection of more than 1,700 flutes—including a Madison one, given to the Founding Fathers in 1813. As a gift from French flute maker Claude Laurent.
After trying to play the flute, she was allowed to play it during her concert this week, with the National Library sending Capitol Police and staff as security to keep an eye on the rare artefact. Sharing the history of the flute with her audience, the “Truth Hurts” singer informed the crowd that she was the “first person to play it” and how “intimidated” she felt doing so.
“That’s crystal. It’s like playing through a wine glass, dog, so be patient,” she said before carefully playing a note, causing the crowd to roar. Lizzo blasted a few more notes, even tossing in her trademark twerk as she played.
“Bitch, I played and played James Madison’s crystal flute from the 1800s. We made history tonight!” Lizzo announced excitedly as she rolled the flute over her head. “History is cool!”
while more Feedback online And there was positivity in the media, the usual cacophony of right-wing taunts and knee-jerk reactionaries jumping on the black megastar’s performance to suggest that it signaled a further decline in society due to awakening.
“The Library of Congress actually took out James Madison’s 200-year-old flute so Lizzo could twerk with it,” groused Greg Price, former Daily Caller editor-GOP operative. “They denigrate our history and then call you a racist if you really value it.”
The Columbia Bugle, a popular MAGA social-media account, raved about Madison’s crystal flute musician, to declare “We’re Going to Let the Kid Rock Crowd Surf Obama’s Presidential Portrait” If Republicans Retake the White House
“An insult ritual. They don’t care about our history,” Beagle said wrote in another tweet. “They just want to mock it and defile it.”
Conservative radio host Jesse Kelly, who predicted the American right would soon “elect a fascist,” took the histrionics even further, contrasting Lizzo’s arrest with an anti-abortion activist for playing a crystal flute, which he probably never knew before. yesterday
“Congratulations if you can make the connection between raiding the home of a peaceful man offering to turn himself in and an anti-American singer twerking on James Madison’s flute,” He posted. “You know what’s happening and what time it is.”
Anti-trans activist and Daily Wire pundit Matt Walsh, meanwhile, smoke The “awakened left” believes the performance was “a form of racial retaliation” and is no doubt part of the reason the Library of Congress put on the spectacle.”
The casually bigoted podcaster went on to mutter that Lizzo is a “fat weirdo in a thong” and that he “doesn’t give a flying shit if she has respect for him.” telling another Twitter user She is an “extremely gifted musician” who has taken due “care” in handling the instrument.
Walsh’s boss, conservative media mogul Ben Shapiro, also took a pseudo-philosophical stance on the so-called scandal.
“This Lizzo-Flute controversy is a perfect example of what I’ve come to call the Face Tattoo Phenomenon ™: the phenomenon whereby someone deliberately does something controversial in an attempt to get attention, and then acts offended when you notice,” he tweeted.
Shapiro, who seems perpetually irritated by black pop musicians and rappers, added later: “If we had seen a clip of Lizzo playing the flute in the halls of the Library of Congress in semi-modest attire, everyone would have shrugged. But it wasn’t the clip everyone championed as groundbreaking: it was the clip where she bragged about twerking.”
Shapiro The anger continued to flow For his podcast listeners on Thursday, Lizzo was taking an instrument that “speaks to the civility of America’s founding fathers” and putting it in a “vulgar context.” Driving that point home, he added: “This is a desecration of American history.”
Somewhat surprisingly, Fox News has so far stayed out of this right-wing outrage cycle. The conservative cable giant’s wannabe TV competitors, however, have jumped on it.
On One America News, the pro-Trump conspiracy channel that recently lost nearly all of its cable and satellite providers, host Cara McKinney insisted that Lizzo twerking was a harbinger of the death of democracy.
“Remember last night when we talked about soft authoritarianism, which is so-called liberal democracy,” McKinney asserted Wednesday night. “Well, keep that in mind while watching Lizzo twerk while mocking the Founding Fathers and their ideals.”
When Newsmax host Jane Pellegrino, a former OAN host, demanded to know when there would be a “separation between entertainment and intelligence,” an on-air graphic said: “Sorry, James Madison.”
Claiming that “a lot of people are outraged,” Pellegrino also argued that “if you subscribe to the liberal agenda,” you will be “rewarded” with an honor like playing Madison’s crystal flute. The Newsmax star then turned to her guest, Turning Point USA contributor John Root, who said it was “amazing and brave” for a fat celebrity to believe she was oppressed by twerking.
