Shania Twain has revealed she once had a very awkward moment at dinner with talk show icon Oprah Winfrey when the conversation turned to religion.
The 57-year-old country singer sat down for a podcast interview on Table Manners with Jessie and Lenny Weir to promote latest single Waking Up Dreaming and revealed how things quickly got ‘sour’ with Oprah, 68.
As she described it as ‘one of my most memorable meals’ with Oprah at a restaurant, Shania recalled how they felt at odds over their religious beliefs.
‘It was great to just talk for real, but as soon as we started talking about religion, everyone turned sour,’ Shania admitted.
Shania Twain’s latest single, Waking Up Dreaming, was released earlier this month. And during her promotional tour for the song, the country singer sat down with Jessie and Lenny Ware for a podcast interview on Table Manners.
‘So, I said, “Let’s stop talking about religion,”‘ Twine recalled, adding that Oprah – who was raised in a Baptist church and is a Christian – ‘is very religious.’
The country singer called Oprah ‘a smart woman’.
She clarified her stance on the matter, saying that she is not religious in the sense that she is devoted to a religion. I am more of a spiritual person. I’d say I’m a seeker.’
Shania, who was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, further hinted at how things got awkward between her and Oprah, saying she likes to argue about things.
She added: ‘There was no room for debate and I love to debate. Canadians love to debate everything. So, I’m like, “Oh, okay. Time to change the subject.’
The singer explained that during the dinner, the stars were free to have a conversation about their religious differences but said that ‘it was not an argument’ and did not elaborate.
During the podcast, the star repeated the phrase: ‘Everyone always says, “Never talk about politics or religion.”
Oprah has previously been candid about her religious journey, describing her as ‘spiritual’ in a 2015 interview with the AARP Bulletin, noting that she was ‘born into the church’.
The 57-year-old actor recalled a dinner he had with Oprah Winfrey, which turned ‘sour’ after they started talking about religion.

‘I’ve definitely always been spiritual, raised by my grandmother on that little acre in Mississippi, doctrinally, born into the church and having the ways of the church,’ she said at the time.
The TV host went on to explain that she ‘grew up in a Baptist church’ and recalled a time when – aged eight – she ‘spent days in hard… [over] Whether she was really ready to give up sin or not.

She noted that she did not consider herself ‘traditional’ when it came to religion, despite praying every night, as she did not go to church every Sunday.
And while the religious debate took a ‘hard’ turn in her conversation with Shania, Oprah said during her AARP interview that she considers herself ‘inclusive’ of all people, no matter what religion they believe.
‘For me to live in a world that does not include other people who are not Christians would be anti-Christian,’ she said.
‘I can’t define “God,” so it’s a natural part of me to be open to the mysteries and mysteries of God. So people criticize me for not being who they are, and I say, it’s working for me and working for me and Working for me, in a way that gives me a sense of peace and contentment about what God means to me. .’
