Brandy 1st Black Cinderella on screen

In the 90s, the singer and actress starred in a remake of "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella."

The musical fantasy was revisited in a "20/20" special that aired Tuesday to commemorate the film's upcoming 25th anniversary.

The TV movie, which starred Brandy and the late Whitney Houston, as well as Whoopi Goldberg, Bernadette Peters, and Jason Alexander, drew over 60 million viewers when it premiered on in November 1997

In 1998, the film was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction.

The film, an adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's 1957 musical comedy, was distinguished by its diverse cast.

"At the time, the idea of Cinderella being a young Black girl was an extraordinary idea," said Alexander, who played Lionel in the film.

"But then you have a Black woman as queen, a white man as king, and an Asian man as prince, and at first glance you are confused."
