President Biden’s controversial political fundraiser on Wednesday appeared to be critical of Giorgia Meloni’s election victory in Italy.
During a speech at the Democratic Governors Association in Washington, DC, Biden warned that democracy could be at risk ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. As an example, he cited the recent Italian election where Meloni, a right-wing figure, became the first female prime minister elected in Italy.
“Well, folks, you know—and I mean this whole heartedly; you might think it’s a little weird, what I’m going to talk about—but, you know, democracy is in danger. Literally, there’s a—not just here, but around the world. The case is being made, because democracy and autocracy,” Biden said.
He added, “And there are a lot of people who believe that democracy cannot survive in the 21st century because – there are problems – so much is changing in science and technology, the environment, various things. It’s very difficult to reach a consensus in such a short period of time.”

He brought up Italy as another example after citing China’s Xi Jinping as arguing that “democracy cannot survive in the 21st century”.
“You just saw what happened in Italy in that election. You see what’s happening all over the world. And the reason I’m saying this is that we can’t be confused about what’s happening here. I don’t want to. Exaggerate, but I want to understate it. No. And that’s why I’m so concerned and interested and so committed to seeing that governor — a Democratic governor — is elected,” Biden said.
Twitter users attacked Biden for suggesting that choosing a conservative Italy could be a threat to democracy.
“The only way to protect democracy is to vote as we tell you!” tweeted columnist Eddie Zipperer.
Washington Free Beacon contributor Noah Pollock wrote, “Another perfect example of the progressive view of politics: All results short of a win for the left are inherently invalid.”
“The left thinks democracy = the left is winning. The right that wins elections is anti-democratic?” Newsbusters executive editor Tim Graham tweeted.

Boxcar CEO Joe Colangelo tweeted, “The wrong people won the elections so democracy needs to be suspended to protect democracy from democratic elections. Well, democracy.”
“Joe Biden spoke at the Democratic Governors Association event last night and Italians electing Giorgia Meloni as their next prime minister means the end of democracy in Italy,” commented Greg Price, senior digital strategist at X Strategies.
